Although motorcycle sales in August remained negative compared to 2024, the overall year to date trend continued to show improvements.

The steady trend in the right direction doesn’t mask the fact that 2025 as a whole has been disappointing, as every month has been down compared to the same period last year.

July offered some of the best results of the year to date, and August’s steady upward trend, although not as good as July, is still a positive overall.

July’s numbers rose above by 2.3 per cent compared to June, which put the overall year to date figures below the negative -20 per cent figure for the first time in 2025. That means overall motorcycle registrations sat at the -17.8 mark. However, that has now improved to -17.2 in August, although the month itself was down by 11.5 per cent compared to this time last year.

What’s likely to serve as a platform for success going forward is that many manufacturers will be releasing new models heading into the latter half of 2025, with a view to 2026.

Speaking about the motorcycle registration numbers in August, Tony Campbell, CEO of MCIA, said:

“It is encouraging to see the market recovering, albeit still negative, with certain segments now performing ahead of 2024.  We remain hopeful that the decline will continue to narrow as we move toward the last quarter of the year.

September will be a crucial month, as the introduction of the new 75 registration plate makes it the second largest volume month for the sector.

Whilst the reduction in Bank of England interest rates will provide some support, ongoing economic uncertainty and the widely discussed potential Tax rises are doing little to boost consumer confidence. We will continue to engage with Government departments to ensure the sector’s needs are fully understood as we head toward the Autumn budget.”
