Ducati sale rumours intensify as unions demand answers and fresh claims emerge of formal bid
Ducati sale speculation has taken another twist after unions have reportedly questioned Volkswagen's plans, while an anonymous insider claims a formal offer has already been submitted.
Fresh speculation surrounding the future of Ducati has gathered pace over the weekend, after labour unions in both Italy and Germany reportedly demanded answers from Volkswagen over the motorcycle brand's future. And while all that was going on, a separate report claims a formal bid has already been lodged for the Bologna manufacturer.
The latest developments, first reported by MotorcycleSports.net, follow weeks of rumours that Volkswagen Group is reviewing its portfolio as part of a wider restructuring programme. While the company has never confirmed Ducati is officially for sale, it has also stopped short of issuing an outright denial, leaving the door open to continued speculation.
According to MotorcycleSports.net, employee representatives in Italy and Germany are now seeking greater clarity from Volkswagen over Ducati's future, with concerns reportedly centred on the uncertainty surrounding one of the group's most successful premium brands. The publication suggests the issue has now moved beyond media speculation and into discussions between workers' representatives and Volkswagen senior management.
Adding further fuel to the fire is a second report from MotorcycleSports.net, which cites an anonymous individual claiming to be a current Ducati employee. The source alleges they have seen internal documentation indicating that a formal proposal to acquire 100 per cent of Ducati Motor Holding has already been submitted and that the process has progressed beyond informal discussions. The report also identifies a purported bidder, although MotorcycleSports.net makes clear it has been unable to verify the claims independently.
As things stand, there remains no official confirmation from either Volkswagen or Ducati that the company is being sold, nor that any offer has been received. Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali has previously played down suggestions that a sale is imminent, insisting there have been no discussions taking place within the company about a change of ownership.
Whether these latest reports prove to be the first signs of a genuine sale process or simply the next chapter in a flurry of rumours that refuse to disappear remains to be seen. But with unions now reportedly seeking answers and claims of a formal bid entering the conversation, speculation surrounding Ducati's future is unlikely to die down any time soon.
