German electric moto start-up set to show off at EICMA

Another day, another electric motorbike company. But this one is offering surprisingly affordable models.

GR1T, the Berlin-based electric motorcycle start-up you’ve probably never heard of, is hoping to make a splash next week at EICMA.

The brand has announced that it will be at the iconic Milan event, showing off its two prototypes: the ‘urban commuter’ G1S Street naked offering 36 hp, and the ‘same bike but with different wheels’ G1X Scrambler.

Electric start-ups are a dime a dozen, of course, but what makes GR1T stand out is the proposed pricing of its bikes. The G1S Street starts at just €6,999, while the G1X Scrambler starts at €7,999. At current exchange rates, that’s about £6,158 and £7,038 respectively. Not bad for an electric.

With an impressive kerb weight of just 127 kg, the GR1T bikes claim top speeds of 130 km/h or 80.7 mph. The bikes are powered by a pair of removable batteries that collectively claim a range of 94 city miles.

Charging on a “low-voltage plug” (we’re guessing that means the sort of outlet you’d have in your house) is 3.2 hours. Not ideal if you’re standing in the rain, but the benefit of removable batteries is that you can bring them into your home or office and charge them while doing something else.

GR1T promises a six-year warranty on its batteries and loads its bikes with all kinds of technological hoo-ha, including 4G/5G connectivity that allows for over-the-air updates, anti-theft, GPS tracking, onboard diagnostics, keyless unlock, wireless phone charging, and four rider modes.

GR1T says it is focusing on France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal as priority markets but doesn’t rule out coming to the UK.

It doesn’t say when production of the motorcycles is set to begin, but is offering a €1,500 discount on the base price of its bikes for everyone making a (fully-refundable) deposit of €100 or more by 31 December.
