Harley-Davidson RMCR cafe racer moves a step closer to production

Earlier this year Harley-Davidson shared photos of a modern-looking cafe racer concept, and that same bike has now taken a step closer to reaching production, alongside a flat tracker that wears a similar name. 

The Harley-Davidson XLCR was the company’s last cafe racer model to be produced, which took place in the 1970s. This means the new RMCR would be the company’s first modern-looking cafe racer in nearly 50 years.

When revealed as a concept model, details about the bike remained scarce, although we could see that Brembo was in charge of the bike’s braking setup. Additionally, a two-into-two Akrapovic exhaust system could be seen through photos released by the brand on social media. However, it was unclear at the time whether the bike was heading for production or not.

While we still don’t have a definitive answer, the American company has since filed trademarks for both the RMCR and RMXR flat tracker, making this a distinct possibility. 

As a concept, the RMCR cafe racer was littered with carbon fibre parts and aggressive detailing, both of which we would expect to remain at the forefront of any final design.

Both models use Harley’s Revolution Max platform, the same 1250cc motor that powers the Pan America and Sportster S. By moving forward with production of both models, Harley’s Back to Bricks strategy would be directly linked to both new motorcycles, which is a strategy that aims to strengthen relationships with dealers, improve the overall ownership experience, sharpen its core motorcycle offering, and deliver a more sustainable business model.

The trademarks for both models were filed on the same day (July 29) to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
