Overall Review

I've owned a 2003 version for 7 years. It's done everything and 46k miles later is still going strong and still looks great. People still ask me if is a new one! It's a small bike but leg room is actually good compared to more modern sportsbikes (like my new Fireblade). Reliable engine, only the alternator has failed in 46k miles and that's a known problem. Bodywork is good quality, engine is solid. If you're a track day addict get a steering damper as I found the front shook its head over bumpy corners (Oulton Park:-) especially when light on fuel. Overall a great bike, can't bring myself to sell it and the looks will always keep residual values high.

Strengths

Looks (won a design award for the rear end and undertray) Engine Handling

Weaknesses

It's small so if you're 6ft or over you will look big on it Needs a steering damper for serious track days

Overall Review

Wish I could find an upright bike that ticks all the boxed my R1 did, closest I came was a Gen 1 Fazer 1000, but 50kgs heavier, so a few awkward moments and pulled my arms out on the twisties due to the weight.

Strengths

Light weight, easy to woman handle by 5.6" 9 stone weakling. Can be a lion or a lamb, covered big mileage on both, touring, track days, commuting, absolutely reliable, very torque. Would return 55mpg overall, load it with enough luggage to go away for a week and still be comfortable.

Weaknesses

None, gave second one to my son as couldn't bear to sell it, covered 60,000 and still as strong and fast as ever. As I used mine all year in all weathers, had to give Exup and brakes TLC, keeping them clean, small price to pay for such a fabulous bike. A dinosaur compared to the current model, but very planted and safe when ridden well.
