BMW K1200R (2005 - 2009)

It's not just fast, it's fun too. Proper knee-down, flick-flacking, 120mph-plus sweepers kind of fun

A stupidly powerful naked bike that looks menacing.
Ultimately a bit pointless, who needs a naked bike that does over 150mph?
It's big, it's weird looking and it doesn't have any clothes on. Oh yes, and it's very, very fast. Are BMW about to take the naked bruiser class by storm?

Overall Review

My previous best bike was a much modified Firestorm, the K1200R does everything better. Ive fitted a taller Secdem screen which is excellent, centre stand, very usefull and now want some hand protectors. Very comfortable to ride with a flexible engine and as much acceleration as I can comfortably handle

Strengths

Brakes,acceleration, handling

Weaknesses

Incredably poor vision in mirrors

Overall Review

Great bike for a weekend spin, but used it also for both daily commute and cross-Europe tours. Struggling a bit in heavy traffic due to its weight and size.

Strengths

Suspension & handling, engine/acceleration, brakes, riding position. ESA for its convenience. Shaft drive.

Weaknesses

Poor mirrors, just in place to show your elbows all the time

Does it all. You can enjoy a steady local run, go touring or ride it balls out and its more than capable of embarrassing the sports bikes !

Strengths

fantastic handling and braking

Weaknesses

screen too small at higher speeds. I have bought a bigger aftermarket one.

Overall Review

Not worth the premium paid to own a BMW. I'll go back to Japanese.

Strengths

Engine power. Handling. Press button suspension adjustment.

Weaknesses

Clunking gearboox. Engine vibes and rattle like there is something loose in it. Engine faffing at low speed and intermittent cut outs and rough running. Early corrosion on engine and swingarm/shaft.

Really can and will do anything you ask of it have taken it for a quick 30 min blast round the local lanes commuted into london on itand taken it down to the far corner of brittany and back, looking forward to putting it down the 1/4 mile at santa pod too before the summer is out. Def not a typical BMW bike (good as i am not a typical BMW biker I hope!!!!) but for anyone who wants something that isnt like those bland japanese bikes (there you go i upset japan and germany in one fould swoop!) and like their machinery a little different well this is the bike. Commutes like a speed triple; keeps up with a litre sports bike on a back lane blast and tours like a pan european! oh and on a sunny day it cruises with more presence than a harley. so if you cant affford a garage full of bikes test ride one and tell me your not smitten!

Strengths

Acceleration, handling, stability, unique appearance and downright presence!

Weaknesses

it aint cheap! (although now the 1300 is decent used ones are better value) and the seat is a little on the hard side for such a bike

Overall Review

As others have said - good for a 30 min blast or as a euro tourer, BMW hard luggage is excellent - I regularly do 500 mile days - all with a smile and only slightly numb bum. Taller screen helps this, and I have fitted hand protectors (from the GS range) to cut out wind blast on the fingers. Remus exhaust improves weight and exhaust note. This is my 2nd K12R - so sad that they are now no longer being produced. IMO these bikes will become iconic.

Strengths

Torque that seems to go on and on and well, on I guess. Rock steady handling Brakes Excellent bike for girls: low centre of gravity, low seat, easy to ride; lots of shopping space in panniers! ;)

Weaknesses

ABS eats disk pads - later model (08). Earlier model (05) bad engine vibes and camchain rattle. Heavy in slow traffic (but pretty damn quick to get out of it!) Too damn good to look at - and too much fun to play on. Can get in the way of proper work being done.

Overall Review

The perfect bike for tall people who find everything getting smaller(i'm 6'5") A total do it all bike- will tour, scratch, and commute, with good economy, plenty of spare power and decent comfort. if you want more wind protection but an Rt or an S, even looks good in a bug eyed industrial way. Not sure if i'd take it on a track though.

Strengths

Absolutely ballistic engine, Great comfort and razor sharp brakes. managed to get 50+ MPG on a sedate ride, but still manage 40ish when being thrashed. build quality seems good, and great ergonomics. Handling is much better than i ever thought from a telelever front end, with loads of feedback

Weaknesses

Pretty poor fuelling at the bottom end, but this seems to be more a general problem with injection over carbs, other than that not much.

Overall Review

I love my K1200R and wouldn't swap for the most bikes, it's fast with a strong engine.

Strengths

Fast, lots of room, excellent mileage, strong engine, hassle free shaft drive, unique looks, good handling, lots of electrical goodies.

Weaknesses

Not so great at low speeds remedied with a booster plug, seat is extremely uncomfortable, expensive servicing, lots of electrical goodies more to go wrong I guess.

Overall Review

Great bike, lasting looks & technology, great performance if you don;t want a race bike.

Strengths

Great for tall bikers, very comfortable, endless power, sound from engine & exhaust, relatively maintenance free shaft drive, can tour, track & do A roads with aplomb, pretty well balanced for a 1200cc naked bike, technology & equipment won't quickly date with BMW and become obsolete, gets admiring looks whenever pulled up (especially on the continent!), it's different from the usual crowd & won't be seen on every bike meet.

Weaknesses

Very heavy especially compared to other naked big bikes, early fuelling issues resulted in jerky low down power delivery, used prices dropping, front end not to everyones liking (but I love it)

Overall Review

Had a view japanese bikes before and R1100S and R1150GS from BMW. Before the latest K1200R I had a KTM 990 SMT which was nice but too nervous for me. I think the K bike is the best overall bike I have had. Smooth but furious if needed and comfortable enough for longer trips.

Strengths

Strong, stable and really good looking.

Weaknesses

Clutch and on/off stylish throttle at low rews.
