Overall Review

The ultimate sports bike in it's day, much better than anything the opposition had, classed as more of a sports tourer nowdays. The riding position can seem a long reach between seat and bars, but is comfortable all the same.

Strengths

Excellent motor, loads of grunt thanks to EXUP valve, sturdy gearbox, if a bit agricultural by modern standards, only has 5 gears but doesn't need anymore, will still keep with modern stuff in the right hands. Long wheelbase keeps it steady in the corners.

Weaknesses

Tend to use oil, suspension has limited adjustments. The overall weight is noticable in the fast twisty bends, and when braking.

Overall Review

Great fun bike, cheap to run and can be picked up very cheaply, however prices are going back up as it reaches cult status with quite a large following. Later models with USD handle better and stop better due to 6 pot calipers, foxeye model being the last of the bunch.

Strengths

5 valve motor, with exup valve, pulls you arms out of their sockets. Very stable, quite comortable too. Total hooligan machine of the day.

Weaknesses

Oil consumption is a problem, only 5 gears and is on the porky side. Exup valves sieze, non Ohlin's shocks are shite.

Overall Review

I've had 3 of these, 2 in the early 90's when it felt like a beast and 1 mint example now that feels like a pussy cat, how times change. Yes I'm older and wiser, well ok the former but it's not just that it's a bit tamer with the experience of more modern tackle, I think modern tyres make a world of difference to an old bike. I did everything on my 1st exup, from drag racing it and I even won a race! to 2 up touring with top box, hard panniers and tank bag.

Strengths

Still very cheap Great mid range punch Looks fantastic in red, white and blue If looked after it will run forever Still pretty quick and very stable if in good order

Weaknesses

Not many good ones left Some burn a lot of oil, some less so but it doesn't appear to matter. Don't expect an R1
