Updated Kawasaki Ninja H2 and H2 Carbon revealed in homologation filings

New CARB and EPA documents reveal updated Kawasaki Ninja H2 models, although the supercharged superbike could be set for a notable reduction in peak power.

Kawasaki has filed emissions and homologation documents in the USA pointing to updated versions of the Ninja H2 and Ninja H2 Carbon. But before you rush off to sign up for the first Run What Ya Brung event of 2027, there's a catch – and it's a fairly chunky one.

The last time the Ninja H2 was homologated in the US, it had a claimed output of 228hp (224 bhp). The latest California Air Resources Board (CARB) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) filings, which identify the bike as a 2027 model, tell a rather different story.

Instead of the headline-grabbing figure we've become used to, the documents appear to align the H2's engine specification (via its emissions details) with that of the Z H2 SE. If that's the case, claimed peak power could drop to 197hp (194bhp), with maximum output also arriving 1,000rpm earlier in the rev range, at 10,500rpm.

That doesn't necessarily mean Kawasaki is simply turning the wick down to satisfy ever-tightening emissions rules, although those will almost certainly have played a part. A more likely explanation is that the firm is looking to simplify production by aligning the Ninja H2 range with the Z H2.

Running two very closely related supercharged engines with markedly different states of tune is unlikely to be the cheapest way to build motorcycles. If Kawasaki can use effectively the same engine specification across both model lines, it stands to save money while making production less complicated.

And before anyone starts mourning the loss of more than 30hp, it's worth remembering that peak power figures rarely tell the whole story. When Suzuki relaunched the Hayabusa with a claimed 190bhp, plenty of owners of older bikes predicted disaster. In reality, back-to-back road rides and closed-course testing showed the latest-generation bike was every bit as rapid where it mattered, despite the smaller number on the spec sheet.

If these filings accurately reflect the production-spec 2027 Ninja H2, the headline figure may have shrunk, but whether that translates into a noticeably slower bike is another question entirely.

Of course, all of this may end up being little more than an interesting footnote for UK buyers. Kawasaki announced last year that it would stop taking new orders for the road-going Ninja H2 and H2 Carbon, making the 2026 model the final edition. So while these US homologation filings offer an intriguing glimpse at what Kawasaki may have planned elsewhere, they may never translate into a bike you'll actually be able to buy on this side of the Atlantic.
