Norton to race 'modern' 1953-spec Manx at 2026 Goodwood Revival

Norton is set to race a 1953-spec Manx motorcycle using modern replica components at the Goodwood Revival, which takes place on September 18-20. 

The 30M ‘Long Stroke’ model will race the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, as part of a partnership with Works Racing.

The motorcycle features Norton’s double overhead-cam engine in its original 100mm ‘long-stroke’ configuration, after 1953 became the last year of this earlier engine design, as from 1954, the stroke was shortened to 86mm. 

For its appearance at the 2026 Goodwood Revival, the engine is housed inside a 1953 ‘bolt-up’ wideline Featherbed frame, which features a longer rear subframe bolted to the main frame, instead of the shorter welded design that was adopted on later motorcycles. 

Both the engine and frame that will be used this week are no strangers to competing at Goodwood, as they’ve both been raced to victory independently of each other, previously.

Built to period specification, the motorcycle also makes use of a four-speed ‘laydown’ gearbox, chain primary drive, three-spring dry clutch, SU GP carburettor and Norton Roadholder front forks. Maximum power comes in at around 46bhp, while Norton says the bike weighs 135kg.

Despite the Manx R superbike's recent arrival, Norton has remained active with regards to its heritage racing roots, which has been evident through its sponsorship of the Lansdowne Classic Series for the 2026 season.

Riding the 1953-period Manx at the Goodwood Revival will be Carl Stevens, Deputy Editor of Motor Cycle News (MCN), and leading classic racer Graham Higlett.
