Norton goes global: How the historic brand's revival is targeting international expansion

Revived Norton is targeting international expansion for the next phase of its ‘resurgence’ following its sensational return in 2026.

The historic British brand was the star of EICMA 2025 when, after its takeover by India’s TVS Motor in 2020 and rebirth at a new facility in Solihull as part of a £200m investment, it unveiled its all-new Manx and Manx R superbikes alongside the Atlas and Atlas GT middleweight adventure twins.

And now, after the successful launch of the Manx R and Atlas, Norton is bidding to grow globally not just with more new models but with new retailers offering a ‘premium retail experience’ in the UK, Europe, India and the US.

The overall goal, part of what Norton calls its ‘Resurgence Strategy’, is to become established over time as a premium motorcycle brand worthy of being mentioned in the same conversation as BMW and Ducati and with the brand values, reputation and retail experience to match.

The plans were revealed by Dieter Knechtel, Norton’s Global Head of Sales since February following previous roles including President Far East and Middle East at Ferrari, Brand President for Porsche Retail China and Bentley Retail China.

His focus, he said, “is on accelerating growth, expanding and strengthening our global retailer network, enhancing retail performance and customer experience, and building a high-performing international sales organisation to support Norton’s next phase of growth.”

In retailers that means more UK outlets, building Norton’s network in Europe, particularly in France, Italy, Germany and Spain, entering the US in early 2027 and also becoming established its fourth key market, India.

All will also use the ‘Retail Pavilion’ Norton developed in conjunction with acclaimed architects/designers Foster + Partners which was launched in August. Norton claims this approach is unique in the two-wheeled world and is in line with its design-led philosophy.

“I think we had a strong start – we can be very proud,” said Knechtel. “Our products have been received very well, we got only positive feedback for both models and we also won two very important design awards for Manx R, the Red Dot: Best of the Best and the IDEA award in the US, so that, at the beginning of our new Norton era was encouraging as well.”

Now, however, comes the push into new markets.

“We represented only the UK at the beginning, so we stabilised the market in the UK then managed to launch in core markets in Europe. France and Italy are well ahead and established and we’re currently putting our focus on Germany and Spain.

“The short-term goals are expanding the UK network, further strengthening the core markets in the EU and also launching overseas.

“In the UK we have currently 13 dealers but we’re definitely looking to expand. Thirteen can cover some areas but not the entire market therefore we’re going to gradually add more. Between now and the end of the first quarter next year we’re
planning to add eight to 10 UK dealers, I think that would be a good number. We’re intensively working on that right now.

“France and Italy were the first European markets we focussed on, and it has been very successful. The network is already quite strong but still growing. We have many other partners already confirmed that are coming online step by step.

“In Germany and Spain, we need to seize the potential because both are very relevant for Norton. We are also working with distributors in other parts of Europe, so have already signed contracts with markets such as Portugal, Malta, Greece,
Hungary and Slovakia and that’s going to continue."

And what about the US and beyond?

“We’re working towards a launch in the beginning of next year in the US as well as in India, are mapping other markets in Asia and Latin America and looking for distributors in other overseas markets. The plan is to enter the US in Q1. We’re
going to roll out region by region, state by state.

“We can see there’s huge interest. We can measure that by the number of enquiries through the website. It’s overwhelming. I personally didn’t expect we’d have so much interest in new markets where Norton was not represented. So, we’re proud of this and I think we’re going to have a good start as we’ve already a strong base of potential customers.

“In some of these markets we have a chance to start from scratch, which can be an advantage. We know exactly what we want and how we can achieve brand awareness. We’re investing a tremendous amount into marketing activities. I think that will be relevant for the US where we’ve huge potential but not currently any recognition. We also come with something new, something fresh and will be offering something very different.

“The goal for 12 months from now is to have an established, stable, profitable retailer network in the core markets. There will be more products coming which I obviously can’t talk about but the ambition of Norton, backed by TVS, is to stay in the market for the long term. We’re here to stay.

“Building takes time. I want to make sure Norton becomes an established and relevant brand to customers looking for bikes in the premium ‘space’, to be recognised as a contender and maybe convince more and more customers to switch to Norton from established luxury brands. What’s important is that we progress, step by step, every month…

“We’re overwhelmed by the reaction from customers. That was what we wanted to achieve, and I believe we’re on a very, very strong path for further development. So, although we’re very focussed on our ‘external’ customers, people that want to buy the bikes, we’re also focussed on our ‘internal’ customers, the retailers, that adopt the standards and retail experiences we’ve created, and that they are profitable with Norton.

“It’s an exciting time because we really believe Norton is a product that is appealing and that can really make a difference in new markets in other parts of the world.”
