Zontes ZT903-R revealed as three cylinder 150bhp naked

The Chinese brand Zontes is hitting the headlines this week after patent images of its 150bhp triple were leaked.

Zontes is preparing to move into the high-performance naked bike market with a new three-cylinder machine that could put it in the same conversation as the Ducati Monster and Triumph Street Triple, if the early specifications prove accurate.

The new motorcycle, currently known as the ZT903-R (snappy name, I know!), has been spotted undergoing road testing in China, while design registration images provide a clearer look at what appears to be a near-production machine. It represents a significant step up from the company's existing 703R, which uses a 699cc triple producing 95bhp.

Rather than simply increasing the capacity of that existing engine, Zontes appears to have developed an entirely new powerplant. Images of the engine show different castings, mounting points and cover arrangements to those found on the 703 platform, suggesting this is a fresh design rather than a reworked version of the smaller motor.

The precise capacity has yet to be confirmed, although the ZT903-R name points towards an engine in the 900cc region. Zontes has reportedly discussed a power output of around 150 metric horsepower, equivalent to approximately 148bhp, alongside a claimed weight of 183kg. Those figures remain unconfirmed for the final production model, however, and will need to be verified when the bike is officially revealed.

A new rival for Europe's naked bikes?

The ZT903-R's potential appeal extends beyond its engine. The design images show an aluminium chassis paired with a single-sided swingarm, giving the rear end a distinctly premium appearance and putting it visually closer to established performance naked bikes than Zontes' more affordable existing offerings.

Suspension is handled by an upside-down front fork and a rear monoshock, while the front wheel carries twin disc brakes. The registered designs also appear to show Brembo radial-mount calipers, whether they all make it onto the bikes in the showroom, though, remains to be seen.

Styling is suitably aggressive, with stacked LED headlights, bar-end mirrors and angular bodywork extending forwards from the fuel tank. There are also prominent aerodynamic-style panels on either side of the front end, a short rear section and a pair of high-mounted exhaust silencers.

A large rectangular TFT display dominates the cockpit, while details visible in the design images suggest adjustable footrests and a quickshifter could feature on the finished motorcycle.

The electronics package is expected to be extensive, with a six-axis inertial measurement unit, cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes and electronic throttle control among the systems indicated in reports about the bike. These features have yet to be confirmed as part of a final production specification, though, so take them with a pinch of sodium chloride.

When will the Zontes ZT903-R arrive?

The ZT903-R would give Zontes a more direct route into the performance naked category, where the likes of the Triumph Street Triple, Ducati Monster and Yamaha MT-09 already compete. Its three-cylinder layout also gives it a natural technical comparison with Triumph and Yamaha’s middleweight roadsters, although the final engine capacity, performance and weight will determine where it sits within the class.

Price could be another important factor, too. Zontes has built its range around offering substantial bang for buck, and applying that approach to a larger-capacity naked bike could make the ZT903-R an viable alternative to established European and Japanese models.

For now, there is no confirmed UK launch date, price or final production specification. With development prototypes already appearing on Chinese roads, though, the project looks to be progressing beyond the early design stage.
