New Givi XSpace cases switch from slim commuter boxes to touring panniers

Givi has unveiled a new expandable hard case system aimed at riders who use the same bike for commuting, touring and everything in between.

Givi has launched a new expandable hard case called the XSpace, and the big selling point is that it’s designed to work as a slim weekday commuter box and a larger touring case without the rider needing to swap luggage halfway through the week.

The new case uses Givi’s long-running Monokey system and can be fitted either as a top box or as a side pannier. In its smallest setting, it offers 27 litres of storage, but a telescopic mechanism lets it expand to 36 litres when more carrying capacity is needed.

That means riders can keep the bike narrow for filtering through traffic during the working week, then extend the cases for longer trips away or touring duties at the weekend. It also means that, should you not be utilising all 36 litres of maximum storage, you don’t have to put up with items flying around inside the case while riding on bumpy roads.

Unlike soft expandable luggage, which normally relies on zips or fabric sections, the XSpace uses a rigid mechanical expansion system built into the case itself. Givi says the rider can expand or shrink the case externally without unloading whatever is inside.

In compact mode, the case measures 260mm, helping keep the bike slimmer when used as panniers. Expanded out to 320mm, the extra capacity is enough to take a full-size modular adventure helmet, including one with a peak.

The idea itself is a response to how many riders actually use their bikes now. Plenty of adventure bikes and crossovers spend Monday to Friday commuting before being loaded up for weekend getaways. In that scenario, most riders either put up with oversized luggage all week or own multiple sets of boxes to solve the problem.

Givi reckons the XSpace removes some of that compromise by letting one case handle both jobs.

The cases have been developed in Italy and use a technopolymer outer shell designed to resist knocks, UV exposure and general touring abuse. Givi also says the XSpace remains waterproof whether it’s in its compact or expanded setting.

Security has clearly been part of the thinking too. The case includes a locking system designed to stop accidental opening or tampering with the expansion mechanism while parked. BMW riders can also spec versions compatible with the firm’s OEM single-key systems, while GIVI’s own Smart Security Lock is available as an option.

Two finishes will be offered from launch: one with an aluminium upper panel and another finished entirely in black.

Pricing and UK availability are expected to be confirmed soon, but the XSpace looks like Givi is trying to bridge the gap between day-to-day practicality and proper touring luggage without asking riders to choose one or the other.
