TVS Apache 200; BMW connections continue

Leaked image of new Indian single has styling links to G 310 R

APOLOGIES for the grainy picture but this patent filing for the soon-to-be-launched TVS Apache RTR 200 is the first look at a bike that may represent another step in the tie-in between the Indian firm and BMW.

While aimed at the Indian market and replacing the Apache RTR 180, the new 200 version shares notable styling links with the BMW G 310 R, which itself is the first fruit of the collaboration between BMW and TVS.  In particular, the headlight shape is near-identical to the BMW’s, and the triangular instrument pod above it also mimics the G 310 R. Further back, the distinct line along the side of the fuel tank is BMW-ish, and the tank itself, running forward around the frame to a front edge that’s parallel to the line of the forks, is similar to the G 310 R’s design.

There are also overtones of the styling of the TVS Draken concept bike to be seen, particularly in the wheels and the seat design, with a stepped pillion pad and air intakes (why?) either side.

The engine is understood to be a tweaked version of the air-cooled single in the existing Apache RTR 180, with BMW having helped with the modifications.

Although it remains unlikely that the TVS Apache will ever be badged as a BMW – at least not in Europe – might it make some sense if it was scaled down to 125cc and sold as a learner-legal machine?
