Motorcyclist caught speeding at 155mph on dual carriageway in Cornwall

A motorcyclist in the UK is set for a court hearing after being caught speeding at more than double the speed limit on a dual carriageway. 

The incident took place on May 30, 2026, when the motorcyclist was caught doing 155mph in a 70 zone. 

The speeding offence was reported by the Devon and Cornwall Police Road Safety Team, which says more information regarding the outcome of the court hearing will be provided in “due course”. 

By travelling at 155mph, the rider not only put his own life at risk, but also the lives of other road users around him. The rider can be seen doing these reckless speeds while overtaking cars on the inside lane, on what seems to be a 60th Grand Prix Anniversary Yamaha supersport. 

Hitting such speeds means the motorcycle rider was likely covering the distance of a full size football pitch in roughly 1.5 seconds. That’s the same amount of time that the average road user takes before they begin reacting to a hazard, according to the safety team. 

A social media post from the Devon and Cornwall Police Road Safety Team said this about the speeding offence: 

“The summer months, dry weather, longer evenings and sunny days create great conditions for getting out and enjoying a ride on your motorcycle. No problem, if you can keep within the speed limit and focus on your safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.

“This rider chose not to do that, and will be paying the price at an upcoming court hearing. We will report back with the result in due course.

“Riding at more than double the speed limit on a busy dual carriageway is completely irresponsible. At 155 mph, a bike is covering the length of a football pitch every 1.5 seconds. 

“A typical alert driver will take 1.5 seconds to begin to react to a hazard in the road ahead. That's 104 m of travel before brakes have even been applied. Add on braking distance of 350 m and you've travelled the length of four and a half football pitches, or considerably more than one whole lap of an Olympic running track before stopping.

“At 155 mph, the kinetic energy of a motorcycle crash would be equivalent to dropping a family car from a 20 storey building (imagine the top of Truro Cathedral spire). All that energy would be instantly absorbed by the rider, their bike and whatever they crashed into. That 'whatever' could be a crash barrier, a bridge, or maybe a family travelling in the car they've just collided with. It's not a risk that is borne by the rider alone, and there are very often far reaching consequences for other people that go well beyond the rider themselves.”

While no accident between the biker and other road users occurred, thankfully, the outcome could have been devastating had that been the case.
