New AGV Pista GP R3 helmet makes the risk of concussion six times less likely

AGV has launched the latest evolution of its flagship race helmet with the new Pista GP R3, which was recently tested by MotoGP riders at the Misano Grand Prix.

The new helmet builds on the foundations used by the Pista GP-RR with the introduction of new technologies that raise safety and performance standards higher than before, including over 100 new molds for new and redesigned components.

But the highlight of the new helmet is, of course, the AGV Sphera powered by RLS (Release Layer System) technology, which makes the risk of concussion six times less likely, according to the Italian company.

The system has been developed to reduce the effects of oblique impacts during a crash, which can cause rotational acceleration of the brain. This is one of the main causes of severe brain injuries.

This happens when the brain, which is suspended in cerebrospinal fluid, moves after the helmet and skull have rotated first. This delayed rotation between the skull and the brain is typically what results in concussions.

The Sphera system consists of an outer shell that’s attached to the main shell of the helmet, although it is separated by hundreds of microspheres. 

Should a rider suffer an oblique impact with the ground, or another object, then the Sphera AGV system is designed to detach in a controlled manner. By achieving this, a considerable amount of force is therefore minimised, helping to limit the rotational force transmitted to the head. 

Angel Sanchez, CEO of the Dainese Group, said this about the new helmet:

The new helmet’s shell has been made entirely of carbon fibre, and is fully compliant with the current FIM FRHPhe-02 standards set by the FIM. Significant updates were also made with regards to the ventilation system, with the air vents now made from Grilamid, which is a composite of plastic and carbon fibre.

The new helmet was tested and used by MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 riders at the recent Misano MotoGP, with Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, Luca Marini and Franco Morbidelli all using the Pista GP R3 in the premier class.

All three riders said the new lid offered significant steps forward, and for Bezzecchi, it’s a very special helmet for another reason, one that is personal to him.

Bezzecchi added:

The Pista GP R3 is very striking - it really stands out in terms of style.
