BMW is attempting to reshape the hypernaked segment through the reveal of the new M1000 RS, which is a stripped-back version of the company’s flagship superbike.

At the heart of the new bike, which is limited to just 1,000 units worldwide, is the same inline four-cylinder engine that powers the M1000 RR.

The M1000 RR is the machine used by BMW in the WorldSBK championship and in BSB, which also delivers 218 hp as a road-going motorcycle. The M1000 RS delivers its 218 hp (215bhp) at 14,500rpm alongside 83 Ib-ft of torque at 11,000rpm.

But it’s not just the engine where the M1000 RR and M1000 RS share the same platform, as the former serves as the spiritual base for the new hypernaked.

Meanwhile, the technical base is taken from the M1000 R in M Competition trim. The M rider footrest system is taken from the M1000 RR, while the bike’s seat height has been raised by 20mm.

The new M1000 RS also receives the company’s top of the range M titanium exhaust system, as well as Matt carbon M winglets with RS lettering.

Additionally, numerous Matt carbon components, a brushed aluminium fuel tank, new graphics and the Alcantara M seat complete the bike’s premium look.

As standard features, the new bike gets heated grips, traction control, a detailed M start-up animation, Gearshift Assistant Pro, and Dynamic Damping Control (DDC).

The suspension is handled by 45mm upside-down telescopic forks offering adjustable spring preload, and electronically controlled rebound and compression damping. The rear suspension features an aluminium underslung double-sided swingarm with adjustable preload, rebound and compression damping.

Stopping power comes from BMW’s own M Competition package, with a four-piston caliper working alongside 320mm twin discs up front. At the rear is a 220mm single disc that’s paired with a single-piston caliper.

Speaking about the new bike, BMW Motorrad CEO, Markus Flasch, said:

“The BMW M 1000 RS makes a clear statement. RS stands for Rennsport – and that is exactly what you feel in every detail. With 218 hp, maximum precision and a character all its own, it is the world’s most powerful hyper naked bike.

"And because true exclusivity needs limits, we are building exactly 1,000 units. More performance. More character. It simply does not get more M than this.”

BMW says the new hypernaked weighs 196kg as a road-ready, fully fueled bike, while the fuel tank capacity is a claimed 16.5 litres.
