British engineering team has sights set on breaking the land speed world record

Developed by former F1 engineers, the team at Greyhound LSR is aiming to break the land speed world record with speeds of over 400mph.

A British engineering team has its sights set on not only breaking the current land speed world record, but it wants to do so with a speed of 400mph.

The land speed record has belonged to the United States since 1956, while the current record of 376.373mph has not been beaten in the last 15 years.

But the engineers behind Greyhound LSR want to change that by bringing the record back to the UK, and to do that, development has been steered by a group of very clever minds, including former F1 engineers.

One of the team members is Alaster Gibson, who once spent four years as the lead mechanic for the Benetton F1 team, and ten years as race team chief mechanic for the BAR and Honda Grand Prix Teams.

To set a top speed of 400mph on a motorcycle, a lot has to go right, and that’s in some ways why it’s never been achieved.

According to the team behind the Greyhound LSR, the motorcycle “is not a conventional superbike project. It is the development of a purpose-built, record-breaking motorcycle engineered from the ground up to operate beyond 400 mph.”

The team goes on to say that “every component, surface, and structural element is being designed with one objective - controlled, measurable, and repeatable extreme speed”.

The Greyhound LSR machine will attempt to break the world record in Hakskeen Pan, South Africa, where lies a laser flat track with a distance of 12 miles. The team has also confirmed that it will be performing a shakedown test in the UK prior to the world record attempt.

You can follow the team’s journey on its social media accounts, where it has already provided detailed insights into the build process of the Greyhound LSR motorcycle.
