Alex Marquez to miss upcoming MotoGP races after horror crash

Alex Marquez will miss at least two MotoGP races as he continues to recover from his horror crash in Catalunya.

Gresini Racing has confirmed that four-time MotoGP race winner Alex Marquez will be out of action for the Italian and Hungarian GPs.

While the announcement is anything but a surprise given the nature of Marquez's injury, it’s a big blow for the team as the Spaniard has been Gresini’s best rider by some margin over team-mate Fermin Aldeguer in 2026.

Marquez will miss the next two races because of the horror crash he suffered in Catalunya last weekend, which led to surgery on Sunday evening, before he was released on Monday.

Marquez suffered multiple fractures following a collision with race leader at the time, Pedro Acosta. The Gresini Ducati rider hit the rear of Acosta’s KTM when the latter suffered a technical issue coming down the back straight.

With Marquez following Acosta closely, the 30-year-old was left with no time to react as the impact sent Marquez and his machine off-track.

Still sitting in the saddle at this stage, Marquez was then launched from his motorcycle when it flipped into the air. Marquez was seen sliding along the grass at the side of the track, while his Ducati came back onto the circuit, with debris flying in all directions. Some of that debris hit Fabio di Giannantonio, including a tyre, with the Italian falling as a result.

It’s unclear if Marquez will return after the next two races, or if the team will end up confirming a longer absence. There’s also no news at this stage on whether Gresini will bring in a replacement for Marquez, with Ducati’s official test rider Michele Pirro the most likely candidate if that is the case.
