Suzuki SV1000 (2003 - 2005)

It’s not as racy as Aprilia’s Tuono but has that typical SV reassuring feeling about it that gives you confidence

Good town bike that is slightly larger and heavier than its 650cc sibling.
May not excite enough for more experienced riders
The SV1000 is like the 650, but on steroids. Like your best friend it’s solid, reliable and fun to be with. If you are after a naked bike it’s very competent but it does lack the ‘kick-in-the pants’ elements of the TL.

Overall Review

This is brilliant, I sold my ZX9R E1 to buy 2004 SV1000 and I can say it was a good move. Shod with Michelin road pilots and suspension set up for a lardy 195lb It handles as good if not better than the ZX9. No chicken strips and wheelies out of slow corners The engine pulls like a train and is still going strong when I backed off at 140mph. I have fitted a tail tidy and small headlamp fairing from "Busters" I had a TL1000s before the ZX9 and this has much better power delivery and to be honest I don't notice the lack of horses, possibly as the SV feels so light. I would recommend this to anyone, it has power, handling and above all the "Grin Factor"

Strengths

Engine and handling and errrr engine!.

Weaknesses

Seat's a bit hard!

Overall Review

Brilliant, cheap and does everything the expensive ones do. But don't tell everyone or the prices will go up.

Strengths

Having toured through France, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia Italy and back to Blighty this year I can honestly say this bike has given me more smiles per mile than any other I can recall. Sounds fabulous, short wheelbase for mucho fun, handles well in most circumstances but it can tie itself in a bit of a knot on bumpy back roads if you push on a bit.(nowhere as bad as the TL though). The engine braking made for brilliant smooth fun through the Austrian Alps, no need to brake, roll it off on the approach then wind it on through the bends! fantastic.

Weaknesses

Seat is a bit hard after a lot of miles(I took a foam cushion with me to Hungary!) The riding position is a little too sporty for a long distance tourer as it bends your knees too far (well it did for this old git anyway!)

Overall Review

Hope mine keeps going forever as I cannot think of what could possibly replace it.

Strengths

The engine. It just pulls from anywhere in the range- and I mean anywhere. Approach the red-line and the horizon is suddenly getting much closer. I know there are faster bikes out there but it is hard to imagine how any more speed or power could be usable on the roads. The suspension seems to take care of British roads without any undue concern (it has a proper modern frame unlike many ‘naked retro’ bikes) and it is small and light enough to filter with the mopeds. Talking of light, it can be wheeled around like a pushbike and hustles you through the twisties with confidence.

Weaknesses

The seat does hurt after a while AND the fuel consumption is not great but at least you get to give your arse a rest every 130 miles or so….

Overall Review

Top value big bike thrills with reliability they are going to last a very long time. 30,000 miles plus on mine form new and just brilliant to take out every time.

Strengths

Such character from what is actually quite a refined 1000 V twin. Lots of torque low down to pic you up out of bends with ease without going up and down the box. Lovely switch like gear change. Let it rev and you get the ultimate kick in the rear. Light and agile it plays the two up country lane explorer to the fast set on a track day. All in one bike. Parts are reasonable prices if bought from the US. Plenty of after market stuff about.

Weaknesses

Clutch gets loud at idle and can cause some vibration under load. UK and European parts prices are double the US prices. Thank heaven for the internet as local dealerships have folded over the years so no local support for those bits you need now. Not that they were that much help as poorly supported by the importers when it comes to warranty work. Eat back tyres if you use the grunt.
