Honda confirms plans to enter e-MTB market after revealing prototype model

Recognised as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, Honda is now looking to make headway in the e-MTB market for the first time. 

Honda’s all-new e-MTB Prototype was showcased at the Sea Otter Europe 2026 festival, in Girona, Spain, alongside various other electric models, including the iconic RN01 prototype downhill mountain bike from the early 2000s, the CR Proto electric motocross bike and the RTL Electric competition Trial bike.

The diverse line-up of electric models is yet another indication of Honda’s ambition to become one of the leading motorcycle manufacturers in the ever-growing electric segment. 

The Honda e-MTB Prototype is the company’s latest two-wheel model to be unveiled, following the official launch of the WN7 motorcycle earlier this year.

Alongside the new WN7, which is the company’s first full-size electric motorcycle, Honda also unveiled the futuristic EV Outlier Concept.

But unlike the WN7, the EV Outlier Concept has not been moved from concept status to a production motorcycle, and that might never be the case.

However, Honda certainly seems to have big plans regarding the e-MTB Prototype, which has already been tested by none other than Toni Bou, who has won 40 trials GP world titles across the indoor and outdoor disciplines.

The e-MTB prototype is a mountain bike featuring electric assistance, developed under the concept ‘New Terrain, Same Dream’. 

Honda says more information regarding the name of the model, pricing, availability, and its market rollout will be revealed at a later date.

Speaking about the new model and Honda’s first-ever appearance at the festival, Albert Erlacher, Head of Motorcycles HME-DE and project lead for the e-MTB, said:

"Sea Otter Europe provides the perfect platform for Honda to engage with the cycling community and introduce our vision for electric mountain biking. The e-MTB Prototype combines distinctive Honda styling with proven engineering to deliver a unique riding experience. This is an exciting moment for the brand as we enter a new segment, and we look forward to sharing further details with customers in the lead-up to launch."
