Electric Royal Enfield Himalayan Spied Undergoing Testing in India

The spy shots show an electric version of the Royal Enfield Himalayan in what looks like production-ready form.

The electric Royal Enfield Himalayan project seems to be continuing at pace, as a test bike is spotted on the road in India, and it looks to be close to production.

We first got a glimpse of the electric Royal Enfield, codenamed the HIM-E, at EICMA back in 2023. Then it was a mud-splattered mule, with Royal Enfield top brass remaining tight-lipped on when the bike could eventually arrive. The answer to that could be sooner rather than later, as this near-production-ready example of the bike shows.

The bike we saw at EICMA was very much a mule, mixing design elements of Johnny 5 with retro elements from the Indian brand’s petrol-powered bikes - see the conventional crankcase nestled above the bash plate. This new model, though, looks much more like the finished article, with only the swingarm and swooping fuel tank looking similar to those we saw on the 2023 machine.

Indeed, Enfield’s design team have even tied the design of the bike’s battery pack into the aesthetic style of the Flying Flea sub-brand, launched at EICMA in 2024. The cooling fins of the bike spotted in Ladakh ape the swooping lines found on the Flying Flea FF-C6 and FF-S6, but from there, the similarities end.

Like the mule we saw at EICMA, the latest bike wears proper long-travel suspension, which looks to have adjusters on the forks, and Ohlins branding on the piggyback rear shock absorber. It’s difficult to make out the braking system, although it looks like there’s some Nissin branding on the caliper located at the front of the bike, and the disc seems to be one of the Japanese brand’s 310mm items.

Unlike the HIM-E mule, which featured extensive trellis work in its construction, much of the latest prototype seems to be built from CNC and forged aluminium. The battery and motor seem to both sit in the frame as stressed members - common in the electric bike world - while the swingarm mounts directly to the motor.

At the launch of the HIM-E in 2023, B Govindarajan, CEO of Royal Enfield, said:

“At Royal Enfield, our Electric Mobility team is powered by the objective of preserving the quintessential Royal Enfield DNA, and extending that into our creative ideas and designs for electric motorcycles as well. This Electric Himalayan concept motorcycle is an outcome of this pursuit, as purpose and innovation meet distinct Royal Enfield design and character. This motorcycle is only just a part of a much bigger sustainable ecosystem of exploration and adventure that we are working on in the Himalayas. From green charging pit-stops, to our responsible travel initiative, from creating self-sustaining communities to collaboration with UNESCO to preserve the intangible cultural heritage of the Himalayan region, there are a lot of initiatives we are passionately driving”
