Baja Espana-Aragon motorcycle rally suspended due to risk of extreme wildfires

Spanish authorities have confirmed that this month’s Baja Espana-Aragon motorcycle rally has been postponed due to the threat of extreme wildfires.

The concerns are no doubt related to the prolonged heat waves that have affected many European countries over the last few weeks. Spain has been one of the countries heavily affected by this, and on Wednesday it was reported that wildfires broke out in other areas of the country, including El Cerro del Andevalo, which is located in Huelva. 

According to the Associated Press, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez visited the city of Guadalajara, which is around 62 miles north of Madrid, after a huge wildfire broke out in the region. This wildfire is said to have burned over 79,000 acres of land. 

Due to growing concerns that more extreme wildfires could take place in Aragon, organisers of the event, and the FIM, announced that the rally has subsequently been postponed. 

An official statement from the FIM said: 

“The Government of Aragon has confirmed that the Baja España-Aragón 2026, originally scheduled to take place from 24–26 July, has been postponed due to the extreme risk of wildfires across the region.

“The decision follows recommendations from the relevant authorities and was agreed during a meeting involving representatives of the Government of Aragon, the City of Teruel, emergency services, forestry officials and the event organiser, Esedos Events & Productions S.L.

“The postponement comes in response to forecasts of red alert conditions and an extreme risk of forest fires throughout the province of Teruel and the wider Aragon region. Current conditions include exceptionally high temperatures, strong winds, very low humidity and prolonged dry weather, significantly increasing the likelihood of wildfire outbreaks.

“In light of these circumstances, the Government of Aragon determined that postponing the event was the most responsible course of action in order to reduce the risks associated with the large numbers of competitors, officials, spectators and support vehicles that the Baja España-Aragón attracts.”

The statement goes on to say that the decision to postpone the event will allow firefighting teams and emergency services to not be stressed further, given the outbreaks experienced in other parts of the country already.

The Government of Aragon is expected to work closely with the event organiser to find an alternative date for the rally later this year.
