The ACU launches electric motorcycle panel as e-bike racing gathers pace

The ACU has announced a dedicated electric motorcycle panel, giving riders and organisers a direct voice as battery-powered bikes continue to gain ground in competition.

The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU) is opening the door wider to electric motorcycles in British competition, announcing plans to create a dedicated electric motorcycle panel. It comes when an interest in battery-powered bikes continues to grow, both on and off the track.

The new panel will give riders, organisers, promoters and manufacturers involved in electric motorcycle competition a direct voice within the UK's governing body for motorcycle sport, while helping shape how electric machinery is integrated into ACU-sanctioned events in the future.

Although electric bikes already compete in a handful of ACU disciplines, their presence remains relatively limited. The move suggests the governing body believes that it is likely to change, particularly as lightweight electric off-road bikes continue to gain traction among younger riders and newcomers to the sport.

It's a trend we've seen gathering pace in the last few years. Electric motocross and enduro machines have become increasingly visible at a grassroots level, while brands such as Stark Future have demonstrated that battery-powered bikes can now compete at the sharp end of major international events. The Stark Varg grabbed headlines once again at the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo, underlining just how quickly the technology is advancing.

Stark’s entry into the world’s toughest off-road race wasn’t simple, though, with event organisers and teams having to work together to help make it all happen. The ACU, by the looks of this press release, is trying to get ahead of the game, and put some legislation in place that will make future participation far easier for battery-powered competitors.

For the ACU, the attraction isn't simply performance. Electric motorcycles also present a potential solution to one of the biggest challenges facing motorcycle sport in the UK: access to venues.

In announcing the new panel, the organisation highlighted the lower noise levels produced by electric motorcycles as a key benefit, potentially allowing events to be held in locations where traditional petrol-powered competition would face resistance from local communities or landowners. Many UK tracks, both asphalt and dirt, have restrictions on the number of practice and race days that can take place. By taking noise (almost) totally out of the equation, the number of ACU-sanctioned events that could take place would be significantly increased.

The decision, now approved by the ACU Board, forms part of what appears to be a broader effort to ensure the organisation keeps pace with changing technology and rider habits.

Matthew Edwards-Wear, Chief Executive of the ACU, said:

"Electric motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in motorcycle sport, and as the national governing body in the UK, we want to ensure riders, organisers and promoters involved in this area have a platform within the ACU and a structure that supports their ambitions. The creation of the electric motorcycle panel is an important first step.

"One of the most exciting aspects of electric competition is its potential to take motorcycle sport to places that have traditionally been difficult for us to access. Lower sound levels create opportunities to engage with communities, organisers and venues that may not previously have considered hosting motorcycle sport events."

While the ACU has not yet outlined exactly how the panel will operate, its creation is perhaps the clearest sign yet that electric motorcycles are moving from niche curiosity to a recognised part of Britain's competitive motorcycling landscape.
