Abandoned MotoGP Track Added to Different Racing Series
The KymiRing circuit in Finland which had long been destined for MotoGP gets a new lease of life
Made famous but for all the wrong reasons, the KymiRing circuit which went through several cancellations after being built specifically for MotoGP, has now been added as a replacement track for the 2025 Motocross World Championship.
The Finnish venue was set to host MotoGP back in 2020 and 2021 but instead hosted nothing more than a test in 2019 - and not a favourable one, with MotoGP riders calling the venue boring. It has though been thrown a lifeline, as it has been added to the MXGP calendar for a round this summer.
The circuit, which had high hopes of being a mainstay on the MotoGP calendar in 2022 and beyond, failed to stage a race that year, before Dorna sued the circuit organisers for €6m (roughly £5m) as it failed to receive any money from the circuit operators, despite providing invoices detailing the costs in the spring of that year.
But now the revived circuit has an official world championship race to look forward to as MXGP will head to Finland on 12-13 July, with KymiRing being the third venue to host the race in recent years following the MXGP round at Hyvinkaa in 2022 and Vantaa in 2023.
The race didn’t happen at all last year, but 2022’s Finnish GP was only moved to Hyvinkaa after, yes you guessed it, the intended race at KymiRing fell through.
“It is with great pleasure that the MXGP will come back to one of the most passionate motorsport countries in the world,” said David Luongo, CEO of Infront Moto Racing in a statement.
“KymiRing will for sure deliver a fantastic facility to all the riders and our different stakeholders. The Finnish fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic weekend with the best riders in the world.”
Despite its revival, the KymiRing is not intended to be used for MotoGP racing going forward, despite originally being built purposely for that.
