Steve Hislop’s championship-winning Ducati 998RS for sale at £180,000
A very rare, fully BSB-spec, championship-winning race bike has gone up for sale in the UK, and it just so happens to be Steve Hislop’s 2002 Ducati 998RS.
Remember Steve Hislop’s dominant 2002 BSB season aboard the Monstermob Ducati 998RS? Well, that exact motorcycle is now available to buy.
Hislop was victorious eight times with the 998RS that season, also achieving 10 pole positions and 13 fastest laps.
Hislop’s bike is a full factory-built 998RS which formed part of a dominant run for the Italian manufacturer in BSB during the late 90s/early 2000s.
Ducati machinery won every British Superbike title from 1999 through to 2004, although Hislop became the first rider to win the championship with the new 998 model, which took over from the 996RS.
Incredibly, Hislop also broke the Donington Park lap record that season, posting a lap time that was faster than Valentino Rossi’s MotoGP pole lap from the same year.
Of course, a direct comparison cannot be made between the two bikes, as the premier class was still using 500cc two-stroke prototypes at the time. However, it still shows just how capable the 998RS was that year to beat a full-spec Grand Prix machine.
Offered with the bike is an original race suit and a special helmet used by the Scottish rider, who tragically passed away in July, 2003. Hislop died after suffering a crash while piloting his Robinson R44 helicopter.
As well as his exploits in BSB, Hislop was one of the best TT racers of his generation, winning at the iconic road race on 11 occasions.
Known as ‘The Flying Haggis’, Hislop’s Ducati 998RS also comes complete with an ultra-rare original Magneti Marelli data logger.
Additionally, the bike’s new owner will receive copies of the original hand-written Paul Bird Motorsport race documents from the 2002 season.
With all this being said, buying Hislop’s bike is going to require some very deep pockets. The motorcycle, which is being offered by specialist dealer Girardo & Co, is listed at a whopping £180,000.
