At some point in time, you will own a motorcycle that requires a large Allen key or two to undo hollow wheel spindles. Rather than fork out a heavy amount of money for various large metric keys, we’ve witnessed other owners using large bolts to undo the spindle heads - two nuts locked together on the threaded section and the bolt head inserted into the spindle end.

The problem with the bolt method is you will still need a spanner to fit on the inner locking nut to undo the spindle. There’s also a danger of the locked nuts unwinding on the threads at the same time. The result can be messy and painful at the same time, and the spindle left in place.

Machine Mart has a cheap (£7.19) and safer way to achieve hollow spindle removal, especially if it is corroded, which after a few years spindles usually are because they’re a target for road surface water and spray. The corrosion issue isn’t helped when tyre suppliers/fitting “specialists” don’t grease the spindle when refitting a wheel.

The Blue Spot 3/8in Motorcycle Spindle Tool is a stepped hex key/wrench that accommodates hollow spindle heads requiring 17, 19, 22 or 24mm Allen key fitment to loosen or tighten the spindle heads. So yes, four tools in one. It gets better because the Spindle Tool only requires the use of a 3/8in drive ratchet, or a 1/2in ratchet/torque bar with a 3/8in step down to undo the hollow spindle. A torque wrench of the same drive size should, repeat should, be used to tighten the spindle to the correct torque figure.

Machined from steel bar, the Blue Spot 3/8in Motorcycle Spindle Tool is a handy and very durable tool that will serve well for years despite the abuse of being thrown back into a toolbox time and time again. And because of its compact dimensions, it can be packed easily amongst other basic tools you should carry if riding some distance.
