Used: Furygan Shield 3-in-1 textile jacket review

Furygan's do-it-all jacket

I FIND searching for winter gear harder than almost anything else. You whittle your shortlist down to something realistic and go and try it on, only to find they don't fit properly, are too bulky, look naff or something else that makes you turn your nose up at them.

As a result, I was pleasantly surprised when I put on Furygan's Shield 3-in-1 jacket and it fitted perfectly. It's a year-round jacket and as the name suggests is essentially three jackets in one.

Inside are two removable liners, one is fully waterproof, the other is a thermal layer. I rode for a week with all three liners in place before swapping them around slightly.

With all three layers in, the jacket is very warm but feels cumbersome and restricts movement. I've since taken out the thermal layer, and the jacket is still waterproof but a lot more comfortable.

The Shield has CE approved D3O shoulder, elbow and back protectors which feel much thinner than any armour i've had on previous jackets, but in a good way. It still feels safe and secure but you don't get the impression you're wearing rugby shoulder pads.

I've ridden around in this month's floods and heavy rain and not one spot of water has gone through yet. Rain beads off the main textile fabric and the jacket is still relatively warm without the thermal liner. On the back of the jacket is a large pocket which will fit the removable liners, amongst the 11 other pockets on the jacket, there's plenty of storage space.

At £320 it's not cheap, but in my opinion it's not overpriced either. I've owned several Furygan jackets and i've been happy with each one. They've all held together well over the years and I suspect this jacket will too.

If it's within your budget and you want a jacket that will do it all, the Shield 3-in-1 ticks all the boxes.
