Used: DMD Vintage open face helmet review

The perfect companion to my flamboyant Harley

I'VE been running this open face DMD Vintage helmet since I bought my first Harley around six months ago.

It’s not what I’d usually wear but I felt as though a bit of 70’s styling was missing from my life, having only ever really owned modern race lids.

If I was auctioning this helmet on eBay I’d list it as ‘well used’ - it’s seen its fair share of rain and been bumped around quite a bit too. Despite the mistreatment it’s held up well, revealing no visible scratches or water marks on the matt finish.

Not everybody wants a shark on their helmet which is why DMD has a large range of other designs with both matt and gloss finishes.

Some open face lids can weigh up to 1,500g but the Vintage has a claimed weight of only 1,000g. The fiberglass construction feels light and doesn’t stop the DMD from achieving ECE approval. The low weight is good for comfort but not so great for wind noise. I can happily do a day of riding in the Vintage but it’s not as quiet as other open face lids I’ve tested, like the Davida Jet.

I’ve ridden for hours with it on without developing any pain across my head. There’s also enough space to wear goggles or sunglasses in comfort.

The removable liner is soft and comfortable and does a surprisingly good job at keeping water out.

I like that the lid has a conventional D-ring setup and comes with pre-fitted poppers that allows the fitment of a DMD visor. You can also add a peak to the helmet.
