Triumph Street Triple R (2009 - 2012)

a bike you can go ballistic on, charging into corners and generally playing the fool, while for newer riders it’s very reassuring and nimble

Overall Review

I love my Street Triple R, it always puts a smile on my face, and I look forward to every ride. This bike is very light and responsive, it enables you to take corners with confidence every time, and will leave the big litre sports bikes behind on a twisty road. Engine is sweet at any point in the rev range, easy on new riders and great for experienced riders. The 675 triple sounds good, but with the arrow pipes the noise is addictive. Excellent brakes, and well behaved under heavy / emergency use. The wind screen will be required if you plan to use on the motorway as the wind blast gets bad at around 85mph. The bike looks great, and I always get comments from passers by when I park her up somewhere. Steering lock is very naff, but as the bike is so light it presents no real issue. Rider position is great but it is a small bike, so taller riders may not get on so well. Gel seat is still comfortable after a few hours in the saddle. I don't think I will ever want to part with her.

Strengths

Fun fun fun. Great little engine. Light and responsive handling. Easily keeps up with bikes much bigger and more expensive.

Weaknesses

Wind blast on the motorway above 80mph, (I would recommend the optional wind screen). You may have to wait to get hold of one. Limited steering lock.

Overall Review

Well made, reliable and great fun. Good dealer backup (Fowlers)and ideal for an A / B road scratcher, but would'nt want to tour on it without a gel seat!

Strengths

Compliant suspension never seems to get overwhelmed, comfortable for the tank range (140 miles to reserve, about 45mpg), bags of torque, 6th gear overtakes are a norm in flowing traffic.Stonking acceleration and noise (on standard cans) never fails to leave a smile on my face. 100% reliable and fun.

Weaknesses

The OE fit Dunlop Qualifiers are rubbish, and the rear has gone in 2300 miles mainly due to the lack of grip, meaning I havnt leant the bike over enough -widest chicken strips I have ever had! unfortunately the front still has 3-4000 miles left so I am soourcing a Qualifier 2 rear to match - hope its better! Only other niggle is the headlamps which are set too low at the factory, and adjustment could be easier!

Overall Review

FUN,FAST,SMOOTH AND BRITISH ! WHAT MORE WOULD YOU WANT.

Strengths

The engine is sweet sounding and the torque coming out of corners is very impresive almost like a litre bike. The suspension is rock solid making the bike stick to the tarmac like glue which gives the rider the corner confidence of Rossi. Build quailty is good but cleaning on a regular basis is essential. Loads of extras and great add on's from Triumph to make a good looking machine even better. Excellent feedback from dealer (A1 Moto in York)and aftersales service. All in all a number one bike with loads of grin factor every time you throw your leg over it.

Weaknesses

Not a lot really, Seat a little uncomfortable and gearbox clunky i do find it hard to select some gears on odd occasions.

Overall Review

Its British and has character that Jap bikes can only dream about.

Strengths

Engine is ballistic. Handling is second to none. Tyres dont seem to have any limits. Looks like an angry man in car rear view mirror.

Weaknesses

Seat isnt particularly comfy after around an hour. Handling can be fidgety as it changes direction too quickly so no relaxing.

Overall Review

I absolutely love my STR and get serious butterflies every time I start her up. If you are 'umming and aarring' about getting one of these, here's my advice; get off your computer and go and buy one now!!!

Strengths

What a bike! The STR gives you the rush that biking is all about, without the need to hit the warp speed of most sportsbikes. Very light and agile = incredibly flickable and easy to ride in nearly every conceivable scenario. Perfect for beginners and old timers alike. Motor is sublime. Looks very cool (without trying too hard) and sounds bloody awesome, especially when the needle starts pointing upwards!!!

Weaknesses

No fairing = a bit of a chore on long, wet motorway stints. Saddle soreness kicks in after a couple of hours.

Overall Review

It still sounds great and I cannot help twisting its ear from time to time, it flatters my riding and never feels scary out of shape just exciting out of shape, bloody cool bike. Never found any problems with the dunlops so just stuck (ha ha) with them. You must own one in your lifetime don’t miss out it’s the 21st century RD350LC. (Unforgettable) I did get to the IOM in 2010 (souther100) and last year (TT), what can I say, GO THERE! 7th time and it just gets better.

Strengths

After 15,000 miles and 4 years the bike still feels as good as new, done mainly summer (remember that) riding as I have a winter hack to save it from the salt.It has never failed me, a few punctures along the way plus tyres, brake pads and filters but nothing else, yes nothing, I have the same chain and it still has life in it yet. It had a recall for the reg/rect but it didn’t fail it was swapped out while working, free of charge. I have adjusted the suspension a little to suit my riding and but it is a pleasure to ride, fast or slow.

Weaknesses

The only thing that I haven’t been able to sort out is the wind blast, I now have the fly screen and visor which is better but not perfect, with the fly screen only you got the blast in your chest/neck but at very high speed (IOM speeds) it is smooth and feels good, now with the visor it has reduced the blast at 70-80 so it’s much easier for motorway work but at the top end it is more turbulent. Really strange but my DRZ400 can sit at 80 with very little wind blast, like I say it’s better but not perfect. Also worth checking is if you are thinking of buying a bike that is over two year old or getting near its second service interval, make sure it has been done because it’s an expensive one and not easy to do yourself. (Not impossible, just not easy).

The few small faults seem to have been rectified in the 2013 model, but the longer 1st gear will spoil some of the fun

Strengths

Accessible and exciting

Weaknesses

No fuel gauge, short range

Overall Review

Just a good little bike.

Strengths

Sweetest handling bike I've ridden. It has linear power and very predictable. Almost the perfect twisties bike.

Weaknesses

The seat. Have a little Airhawk cushion and its now bearable. Lots of little faults that took a while to get sorted: Miscellaneous leaks, and the crankshaft position sensor shat itself. The high exhaust makes it tricky to attach luggage.

Overall Review

More brilliant than mere words can express. Better than sex with a particularly filthy supermodel and three of her kinkiest mates in a pool filled with lightly warmed baby oil, on a tropical beach.

Strengths

Fast, fun, flickable, characterful. epic handling, all that yet also practical, triple lust... much, much greater than the sum of its parts! Stick some luggage on it & you can even tour on it (in summer).

Weaknesses

Steering lock is atrocious for such a versatile bike (price of a supersport chassis?), I'm always running into the lock-stops in places where a bit of slow control is called for...
