It took just five minutes into Free Practice One of the 2024 MotoGP finale for drama to begin as Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernandez ran into each other on the exit of turn five.

Acosta and Fernandez were part of a big group of riders going through sector two at the time, with fellow KTM rider Brad Binder directly in front of Acosta moments before the collision occurred.

Clearly there was no rider at fault, although it was slightly questionable as to why Fernandez placed himself on the outside of Acosta, who was unable to see him as the circuit continued to veer to the left.

Both Spaniards fell to the ground following the contact which led to a red flag being deployed due to a hefty amount of debris lying on the circuit. Acosta and Fernandez were unhurt from the crash and were able to take part in the remainder of the session.

The drama between both KTM riders was not the only heart-in-mouth moment as championship hopeful Francesco Bagnaia also went down with just a few minutes remaining.

Compared to track conditions when MotoGP usually races in Barcelona during the heat of the summer, getting tyres up to working temperature is always a challenge this time of year - Valencia (the usual season-ending venue) is known for producing a lot of crashes due to very cold conditions - and Bagnaiaā€™s fall was not too dissimilar to the crashes we often see at the Valencian circuit.

Bagnaia has just been overtaken by Maverick Vinales on the run down to turn one before the two-time reigning MotoGP champion immediately lost the front end of his factory Ducati GP24 when grabbing the front brake.
