“Priorities are set”: Is CFMoto planning dual WorldSBK and MotoGP projects?
Chinese company CFMoto is seemingly interested in developing race teams for both WorldSBK and MotoGP.
CFMoto’s interest in joining WorldSBK and MotoGP has seemingly never been greater, with the Chinese brand’s new V4 SR-RR concept potentially the bike to make this a reality.
It’s common knowledge that CFMoto has an interest in joining WorldSBK, but with a project already established in Moto2 and Moto3, the platform for a move into the highest level of two-wheel racing is also there.
No timeline has been given for a potential entry into MotoGP, however, the company is said to be keen on making this happen, according to Aspar team owner, Jorge Martinez.
CFMoto and Martinez have a long-standing partnership that could form the foundation for a project in MotoGP. Furthermore, developing projects in both WorldSBK and MotoGP would make CFMoto one of just four brands to compete in both championships. Currently, only Ducati, Honda and Yamaha have projects in both championships, while Suzuki, Aprilia and Kawasaki have previously competed in both at the same time.
It’s clear that one way or another, CFMoto has big plans with regards to what it wants to do going forward in racing, and the V4 SR-RR looks to be a central part of said plans.
This was confirmed by Martinez when speaking to Speedweek, with the team owner saying:
"The priorities are set. Our partner CFMoto is very interested in developing towards the Superbike World Championship and then MotoGP. It is a unique event in history that a major manufacturer from China is making such investments – investments that include all important areas: promoting talent, supporting teams and infrastructure and technology."
CFMoto’s new 200-plus bhp superbike reportedly set a new all-time top speed record for a Chinese combustion engine motorcycle in June, which was surprisingly close to what MotoGP bikes can achieve.
The new V4 SR-RR reached a top speed of 315.82 km/h (196.2 mph), according to CFMoto, which is only 32.8mph slower than the new MotoGP top speed record set by Jorge Martin at Mugello, earlier this year.
