Takaaki Nakagami MotoGP wildcard could mark the end of an era for one rule

The end of an era for one MotoGP rider, and a regulation that has proved popular with teams and fans over the years, could end following this year’s Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi.

Former full-time LCR Honda rider Takaaki Nakagami will take part in October’s Japanese GP through a wildcard appearance on behalf of HRC. However, MotoGP is set to put an end to this rule from the start of the 850cc era in 2027.

It means that current test riders such as Nakagami, Aleix Espargaro (Honda), Dani Pedrosa (KTM) and many more, will only be able to compete in races if they are replacing one of the full-time riders on the grid. 

But despite October’s race possibly being his last in MotoGP, Nakagami is excited to be handed another wildcard opportunity given it will be his home race. Nakagami said: 

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to compete in the Grand Prix of Japan as a wildcard rider. I am currently focused on the development of Honda’s MotoGP machine in my role as an HRC Development Rider, and this event provides a valuable opportunity to evaluate under race conditions the progress we have made through testing.

“Racing in front of the Japanese fans at my home Grand Prix makes this occasion even more special. Throughout the weekend, my goal will be to gather as much useful data as possible and contribute to further improving the competitiveness of Honda’s MotoGP machine.”

Wildcard entries have been extremely popular with fans over the years, although it’s the teams that have benefited the most as it’s often presented them with opportunities to test parts in order to find more performance.

That being said, it hasn’t stopped wildcard entries from achieving major results, such as Pedrosa, who recorded two of the most impressive finishes in recent years. Pedrosa, who was making his second wildcard appearance of 2023, finished fourth in both the sprint and Grand Prix at Misano. The following year, Pedrosa went one better by finishing third in the sprint race at Jerez.
