This 1967 Barry Sheene Bultaco TSS 250 Type 41 race bike is heading for auction at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull, West Midlands, on Wednesday 29 October.

Sheene raced the TSS in 1968, and this example is estimated to fetch a price around £14,000 to £16,000. Sheene competed in the Grand Prix World Championship from 1970 to 1984, where he won two titles and a total of 23 race wins.

The bike is one of the first that Sheene used during his racing career, and it will be put up for auction by H&H Classics alongside other notable lots. Also set to feature is a Bimota YB9SR formerly owned by Richard Hammond.

You may recognise the Bultaco bike, not necessarily for being a former Sheene race bike, but for its appearance in the 2014 BBC documentary Racing Legends, when it was ridden by comedian Vic Reeves. It was also exhibited at the Silverstone Experience in 2020. Since its birth in 1968 the bike has only had four owners.

Mike Davis, senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics, said this about the Sheene race bike:

“Barry Sheene’s iconic status places him as one of the UK’s most famous, and popular, motorbike racing champions, so we’re delighted to offer one of his race bikes at our upcoming sale.

“As for the very special bike, it’s only had four owners from new and would make an amazing addition to any collection of racing bikes. Who knows, it could even return to action in historic racing.”

The Classic Motorcycle and Vintage Scooter Auction will feature a total of 223 lots, with a total estimate of £916,000.

All lots including the Sheene Bultaco TSS bike will be available to see on Tuesday, 28 October, one day before the auction begins. You can see the full complement of bikes included in the auction at the official H&H Classics website.
