EICMA is the place to be for seeing new motorcycles in large quantities, however, it sometimes gives us things like this new MV Agusta five-cylinder engine concept, which is ready to reshape the Italian motorcycle maker’s future.

After officially unveiling the concept in Milan, we now know more details about the five-cylinder concept, which is already under development.

MV Agusta says it is “developed to redefine expectations across multiple segments - from Supersport to Naked and Touring” - and it will be used in motorcycles ranging from 850cc to 1150cc.

The distinctive engine is also being earmarked for a “highly anticipated model”, says the Varese-based company. It says the model is currently no longer featured in its line-up, but will be in the coming years.

The engine features a three-cylinder crankshaft layout at the front, and a twin-cylinder rear crankshaft that gives it a ‘U’ configuration. The outcome of that means the engine will be narrower than an inline-four, and shorter than a V4 power unit.

The engine will be capable of delivering up to 240 hp (or 236bhp) at more than 16,000rpm and 99.5 Ib-ft of torque at 8,500rpm. Despite its immense power and impressive torque figures, MV says the engine weighs under 60 kg.

Due to its unique five-cylinder firing order, MV Agusta claims “the engine achieves outstanding torque delivery and rideability without the need for variable valve timing, ensuring both low-end usability and maximum power output.”

It goes without saying that we’re excited to see where the development of the new engine goes, and what models will receive it in the future.
