MotoGP star reacts to 2027 single bike proposal
KTM racer Pedro Acosta says a single bike rule in MotoGP would be a “really bad idea” should the cost-cutting proposal get approved.

MotoGP star Pedro Acosta is against the idea of reducing the current two-bike-per-rider rule down to just a single machine from 2027.
According to reports, MotoGP is considering ditching the current system which gives riders somewhat of a safety net when it comes to crashes during a weekend.
If a rider crashes and damages the bike in the process, they can then use the second bike to either continue that session, or take part in the session to follow without any stress. The second bike is especially useful when a race is declared a flag-to-flag, meaning riders can pit in order to swap bikes.

However, the new proposal would remove all of those possibilities, meaning a rider’s weekend could be ruined with just one mistake.
The proposed rule would allow teams and manufacturers to cut costs, which is said to be the driving force behind the potential change. MotoGP is already set for its biggest rule changes in decades from the start of 2027, with the series set to drop engine sizes to 850cc, while also restricting aerodynamics and banning ride-height devices.

But Acosta is not a fan of the idea, as rebuilding a heavily damaged bike in time for the following session would often put extra strain on the mechanics. GPOne.com quotes Acosta saying:
“It’s a really bad idea. I understand that the championship and manufacturers want to cut costs, but this means that if you crash in the Warm-Up, you can’t race. If you crash in qualifying, you can’t qualify, and if you crash in FP1 because you aren't using the best tyre solution and wreck the bike, you can’t make it to Pre-Qualifying.
“I know MotoGP is expensive, but there’s no way three mechanics can rebuild a bike from scratch in three hours. I would understand if you were limited to one bike per session, but you should always have a complete spare available for emergencies, otherwise, your weekend is over after the first day.”
