Michael Dunlop races Suzuki GSX-R750 to victory for dominant Classic TT double

Absent from Saturday’s Historic Junior race, 36-time Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop went back-to-back on Sunday with victory in the Formula 1 and Lightweight/Ultra Lightweight Classic TT races.

The three-lap Formula 1 race went ahead first, with Dunlop initially in second place behind a fast-starting Mike Browne.

Dunlop was over three seconds off the lead by the end of lap one, but the Suzuki GSX-R750 rider soon gained time thanks to a faster pit stop, before taking the lead by the end of lap two.

From there, Dunlop did what he’s so often done at major races around the Isle of Man, as he began to pull clear of the chasing pack.

Dunlop would go on to smash the existing lap record for the Formula 1 Classic TT class, as well as setting a new fastest race time.

Dunlop, who eventually won the race by over 20 seconds, was also the only rider to set an average lap time over 129mph. 

Meanwhile, Conor Cummins was one of 14 riders that failed to finish the race, which included Peter Hickman aboard the WizNorton Racing WRS 588cc rotary.

In the three-lap Lightweight/Ultra Lightweight class, Dunlop once again completed a dominant performance, setting a best lap time of 119.081mph.

No other rider was able to clock a lap time over the 114mph barrier, showing just how strong Dunlop was in that race, but also how strong he’s likely to be throughout the remainder of the event. 

While Dunlop was the star of the show on Sunday, Paul Jordan was victorious in Saturday’s Historic Junior Classic TT race, while John McGuinness secured an unlikely podium finish, with P3.

McGuinness has been in fine form over the course of this year's Classic TT so far, and based off his performances in qualifying, the Historic Senior race could be his best shot at challenging for a race win.
