Same great lid. New look. Reasonable price. HJC tweaks its popular flip-front.

South Korean helmet maker HJC has pulled the cover off a new design for its well-regarded modular touring lid – the RPHA 91.

First unveiled last year, the RPHA 91 boasts a new Premium Integrated Matrix EVO shell and an average weight of 1750 grams – not too far off my (more expensive) Shoei Neotec 3 (1715 g).

The new FENSH graphics scheme – available in three colours – keeps things moving forward stylistically, and provides more options for riders who don’t want to look like everyone else.

In the time since it was released, the RPHA 91, has earned kudos from riders for being particularly quiet. HJC gives partial credit for this to a “3D-engineered low-noise interior that is focused to reduce road noise significantly.” In addition, HJC helmets tend to have a robust neck roll that helps to both keep the helmet snug and block out noise.

Meanwhile, the sun visor is arguably one of the best in the biz. It drops down a little lower than some competitors and offers riders the ability to adjust the visor depth to three different positions. The upside of this is that if you have a big proboscis, like me, or wear glasses, you’re less likely to have them tapping up against the visor.

Speaking of specs, the RPHA 91’s EPS lining is designed to accommodate eyewear, and the chinbar locking system has been designed to place less pressure on the cheek area. And, of course, the crown and cheek pads are removable and washable.

There are five points of potential air ingress (aka vents) on the helmet, with seven places for it to escape. It meets or exceeds ECE 22.06 safety standards, according to HJC, and it is ready to accept Smart HJC Bluetooth systems (sold separately).

A Pinlock 120 anti-fog insert, chin insert, and breath deflector all come in the box.

The RPHA 91 comes with a five-year warranty and is available in four shell sizes: XS-S, M, L, and XL-XXL. With a suggested retail price of £499.99, it is available in retailers now.
