Clarke CMS2 Height Adjustable Mechanics Seat: Are you sitting comfortably

The Clarke CMS2 Height Adjustable Mechanics Seat is as simple to put together as it gets, and means you no longer have to spend long hours stooped next to your bike.

Multipurpose tools are as common as today’s tarmac potholes. Multipurpose seating, however, is a different matter – you’re more likely to find a group of escaped 10mm sockets! But it was while ogling and touching the vast range of tools and accessories at our local Machine Mart that the nearest thing to being the perfect, universal seat grabbed our attention.

If anyone can explain why the male species has a fascination for sitting on swivel chairs or stools and then 360-degrees spinning themselves dizzy, we’d love to hear it. And, why blokes over a certain age at the same time must mutter “Exterminate. Exterminate?” After a quick test, a new Clarke CMS2 Height Adjustable Mechanics Seat was bought for £44.39 including VAT.

Partial assembly meant it took about the same time to fully build the CMS2 as it did to unbox. It’s true – drop the height adjustable hydraulic ram into the base, drop the red vinyl covered pad onto the top of the ram and that’s it. Even the five free-rolling castor wheels are already firmly attached.

Seat yourself onto the not-so-firm pad and… amuse yourself once more by spinning yourself into wearing a big grin and then leg flicking the CMS2 and yourself the breadth and length of the garage/mancave. Several times.

On a serious note, CMS2 was originally designed for working around four-wheelers (CMS = Car Mechanics’ Stool) but is also perfect for working around a motorcycle, especially if it’s parked on a raised or lowered bike ramp, e.g. Clarke CML7 Motorcycle Lift.

Short or tall, one-finger lever adjustment can alter the CMS2 seat height anywhere between 380-490mm – within easy reach of tools and fasteners that can be conveniently placed in the CMS2’s pie dish-shaped base. Brilliant. Finished in durable red and black coating, scratches and corrosion shouldn’t come into it for years to come.

If, like us, you thought you should never work on a bike while seated, you really have got to try doing so. We’re pretty sure there’ll be a fair few converts. Finally, when work is completed, the CMS2 is equally adapt for chilling; kick back towards the bench, spin around and grab that nearly cold cuppa and relax.
