Motorcycle registrations in June took a steep 18.6 per cent decline, which comes off the back of improvements in April and May compared to the same period last year.

The latest monthly figures were released by the MCIA (Motorcycle Industry Association), which includes data for Mopeds, Scooters, Motorcycles and other specific vehicle types within the wider L-Category sector.

While June’s drop in new registrations was a disappointing result, according to the MCIA, overall figures are also down compared to the same period in 2024.

The numbers for the second quarter of 2025 (April - June) are down by -15.4 per cent, while the numbers from June 2024 to 2025 are down by -20.1 per cent.

The MCIA believes an upwards trend of new registrations will take place in the coming months, however, it’s blamed the use of illegal e-bikes as one of the reasons for the declining figures.

There’s also concerns regarding the current economic situation, which Tony Campbell, CEO of the MCIA, confirmed is resulting in a loss of confidence for customers.

Campbell said: “The year so far has been extremely challenging for the sector where a continuation of the economic uncertainty no doubt is creating a loss of consumer confidence, not helped by the expanding use of illegal e-bikes that continue to erode the lower end of the market.

“Whilst the headline figures do not make for good reading, there are some segments of the market performing well compared to the previous year. MCIA are continuing to push the Government to finally announce the all-important rider licence review, and at the same time lobby authorities to clamp down on the illegal use of tampered/high powered e-bikes. Whilst we do not foresee a big upturn in the market for the balance of 2025, we do believe there will be an improving trend in the coming months.”

The continued good weather in the UK should help over the remainder of the summer with new registrations potentially picking back up ahead of the autumn, which is typically a busy time with new models being unveiled ahead of the upcoming year.
