Retro Honda CB500 revealed in India - could it lead to a GB500 for the UK and Europe
Honda has unveiled its all-new CB500 in India, but all the signs point to the retro roadster eventually becoming a GB500S for European and UK riders.

When Honda launched the GB350S in Europe, one of the biggest criticisms levelled at it wasn't the styling, build quality or charm. It was the engine. While the laid-back 348cc single won plenty of fans, including us, there was always a feeling that the bike deserved just a little more shove for faster European roads.
Now Honda might finally have the answer, as the Indian arm of the Japanese brand has pulled the wraps off an all-new retro CB500 in India, powered by a brand-new 501cc air and oil-cooled single-cylinder engine. On paper it's an India-only launch for now, but with Honda already trademarking the GB500S name in several markets, including Europe, it doesn't take much imagination to see where this story could be heading.

Unlike the familiar 471cc parallel twin found in the CB500 Hornet, NX500 and CL500, this is an entirely new engine designed around relaxed, torque-rich riding. It produces a claimed 27bhp and 43.3Nm and while those numbers won't excite sports bike riders, that is missing the point. This is a modern long-stroke single aimed squarely at riders who value character over outright performance.
Visually, the similarities with the GB350S are impossible to ignore. You get the same classic proportions, teardrop tank, round LED headlight, twin shocks at the back and fork gaiters at the front. Even the neat single dial display looks basically the same as found on the Indian-spec CB350, which is also known as The H’Ness. The difference is that everything has been scaled up, giving the bike a little more road presence while retaining the understated styling that made the GB350S so appealing.
Having ridden the GB350S last year, what became clear was that it was never lacking personality. Instead, it lacked effortless motorway performance. The 500cc motor appears to address exactly that, bringing almost 45 per cent more torque than the smaller bike while keeping the same easy-going character.
Will a Honda GB500S be heading to the UK and Europe

Honda certainly isn't saying, but there are enough breadcrumbs to suggest this story may not end in India. We've reached out to Honda UK for comment, although I'm expecting the familiar response: "Honda Motorcycles doesn't comment on the possibility of future models." That's essentially what the company told me when I asked whether the GB350S would make it to the UK, and we all know how that turned out. I'll update this article if and when Honda responds.
*Edit: Honda UK has come back with a comment which is – "We have no comment to make at the moment on possible future additions to our European line-up". So I was 90 per cent correct.
The GB500S trademark has already been filed, and the European GB350S has established the GB name as Honda's retro brand outside Asia. Launching the bigger-capacity bike as a GB500S rather than a CB500 would make perfect sense, allowing Honda to differentiate it from its existing family of 500cc twin-cylinder machines.

The timing also fits, with Honda saying that the CB500 will be built in India, with a domestic launch expected later this year. If production ramps up smoothly and demand proves strong enough, a European unveiling at EICMA 2027 would be a logical next step. That could potentially lead to an arrival in UK dealerships from early 2028.
Nothing is confirmed, and this remains informed speculation rather than insider information. But Honda has already demonstrated with the GB350S that there's appetite for honest, uncomplicated retro singles in Europe. The biggest criticism of that bike was its modest performance and lack of motorway punch. A 500cc version seems to answer that complaint almost perfectly.
