BSB Silverstone Race 2 Results | Irwin rebuffs late Ryde lunge after Ray falls

Glenn Irwin benefits from Bradley Ray's spill out of the lead to claim his second BSB victory of the weekend at Silverstone from Kyle Ryde and Rory Skinner

Glenn Irwin notched up his second British Superbike Championship (BSB) victory of the weekend at Silverstone after capitalising on Bradley Ray’s tumble out of the lead.

Continuing a perfect weekend thus far for the Honda Racing rider, Irwin - a lights-to-flag winner from pole position in Saturday’s Race 1 - was made to work harder for his second win in Race 2 from fourth on the grid.

However, after fighting his way up to second place, he took full advantage of a low-side into the gravel trap at Luffield for Ray with six laps to go, before resisting a determined last gasp assault from Ryde.

The OMG Yamaha rider lost out to Irwin for second on Lap 20 but with a victory in the offing in the wake of his team-mate’s exit, built up to a lunge into the final corner. However, despite drawing alongside - leading to a brief moment of contact - Irwin held firm to out-sprint his rival to the flag.

Rory Skinner ran the duo close but had to settle for his third career BSB podium in third, followed home by FS-3 Kawasaki team-mate Lee Jackson, who prevailed in a tight fight with Andrew Irwin, who rallied hard with his brother in the podium battle early on before crossing the line fifth.

Jason O’Halloran’s muted weekend continued with a quiet run to sixth, ahead of Peter Hickman, who made up good ground en route to seventh aboard the FHO BMW. Tommy Bridewell led the Ducati challenge in eighth place. Danny Buchan and Christian Iddon rounded out the top ten.

Elsewhere, MCE Ducati’s inauspicious start to the year continued with Josh Brookes only able to manage 11th, while Tom Sykes suffered a bruising crash on lap four after high-siding on the exit of at Woodcote in an incident that also led to Chrissy Rouse falling heavily when he rear-ended Dan Linfoot as he braked to avoid the spiralling Sykes in front of him.

A non-finisher in race one, 2018 BSB champion Leon Haslam recovered to 15th for a single point, while Storm Stacey, Dan Jones and Luke Mossey were involved in a vicious tangle on the opening lap.
