Honda Fireblade engineer explains decision to ditch the winglets on all but top spec variant

Winglets might be fashionable, but Honda says they're not necessary on every Fireblade. Here's why the 2027 standard and SP models go without them.

Winglets have become almost obligatory on modern superbikes, but Honda has taken a slightly different approach with its 2027 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, offering its standard and SP models without the aerodynamic appendages.

The Japanese manufacturer has reserved the prominent winglets for its range-topping HRC Works Edition, leaving the other two versions with a cleaner-looking front end. According to Takazumi Hayashi, the decision comes down to the different priorities of the three motorcycles.

Speaking to Visordown at EICMA 2026, the Fireblade's Large Project Leader explained that the HRC Works Edition was developed with racing performance as its primary objective, with its aerodynamic package generating significantly more downforce than the standard and SP versions.

Hayashi put that difference at around 3.5 times the downforce, although the additional aerodynamic performance comes with a compromise.

The extra equipment adds a tad more weight to the bike and can have an impact on handling, which is why Honda decided to develop the standard and SP versions without the same aerodynamic package.

"To improve handling, we developed the standard and SP versions," Hayashi explained. He added that the two models are lighter and offer different handling characteristics to the HRC Works Edition.

Interestingly, Hayashi admitted that he personally prefers the appearance of the Fireblade without winglets, although he was clear that their use remains important for racing.

"For racing performance and to comply with current regulations, winglets are indispensable," he said. "We cannot eliminate them from the racing version."

So, Honda's decision to ditch them from two bikes in the Fireblade family isn't the brand suggesting that winglets are pointless, or that its standard and SP models achieve identical aerodynamic performance without them.

Instead, it has chosen to give its customers a choice between a more road-focused configuration and a version developed with racing firmly in mind.

The decision also appears to have been made without any major disagreement between Honda's engineering and marketing departments.

Hayashi explained that both sides understood the thinking behind the three-model range from the beginning, with the HRC Works Edition aimed at racing, while the standard and SP versions are intended for riders who want to enjoy their Fireblade on the road and on public roads.
