BSB Donington Park Race 2 Results: Scott Redding closes on BSB title

BSB Donington Park, Race 2 Results - Scott Redding makes it four wins from four Title Showdown races to open up a comfortable gap ahead of finale

Scott Redding takes a 28-point advantage into the final round of the 2019 British Superbike Championship as he reeled off his fourth consecutive victory at Donington Park.

Fresh from his dominant win in race one, the Be Wiser PBM Ducati produced a similarly impressive performance in race two to overturn a deficit in the early stages to Josh Brookes before resisting a renewed threat from his team-mate in the final laps.

A fourth win from four Title Showdown starts, though Brookes kept Redding pegged at a slight five-point increase with his run to second position, Redding is now well positioned heading into the three races at Brands Hatch to seal the title in his rookie year and ahead of his move into WorldSBK.

Starting from pole position, though Redding was bumped down to third position into turn one, he was up to second and already shadowing Brookes when the safety car was called to clear gravel off the racing line at the Esses on lap three.

Unusually, though Brookes was the one following the safety car, it was Redding that backed the field up behind as he sought to leave a big gap to the Australian intentionally in an attempt to speed up ahead of the restart, thus getting more heat into his tyres.

It was a tactic that worked wonders when Brookes ran wide at Redgate as they got underway again and slipped to third behind Tommy Bridewell as well.

Allowing Redding breathing room up front, the ex-MotoGP rider sprinted away into a comfortable lead but found himself under pressure in the final laps as Brookes – having regained his momentum – began pumping in record laps to shorten the gap. However, Redding had enough in hand, keeping his lines tidy to prevent Brookes from attempting a critical pass on the last lap.

His tenth win of the year, Redding also maintained his perfect record of pole positions and wins from the Title Showdown events.

Behind Brookes, Bridewell notched up his second podium of the day in third but now sits 65 points off the championship lead with only a maximum of 75 still available from the final round.

Danny Buchan consolidated fourth overall with a run to that position in race two, while Christian Iddon held off a charging Bradley Ray for fifth, the Buildbase Suzuki rider storming up from the back of the grid for one of his best performances of the season.

Andrew Irwin and Xavi Fores picked up solid points for Honda in seventh and eighth, ahead of McAMS Yamaha duo Tarran Mackenzie and Jason O’Halloran.

Elsewhere, Peter Hickman suffered an ill-timed DNF to suffer only his second non-score of the year.
