Pol Espargaro replaces Maverick Vinales at Tech3 KTM for British MotoGP
Maverick Vinales will miss the British MotoGP at Silverstone, with KTM test rider Pol Espargaro drafted in as his replacement following fresh injury concerns.
Maverick Vinales' increasingly strange 2026 season has taken another turn, with KTM confirming that Pol Espargaro will replace the Spaniard at this weekend's British Grand Prix while he continues his recovery from a long-running shoulder injury.
The announcement comes just days after Vinales publicly dismissed reports suggesting KTM was preparing to sideline him for the remainder of the season, branding speculation over his future as "stupid" and insisting he remains committed to seeing out his contract. Instead of ending the rumours, however, the news of his absence at Silverstone is likely to raise eyebrows in the paddock.
KTM says the decision is purely medical. Vinales has been working with specialists over the summer break after struggling to regain full strength and mobility following the shoulder injury he suffered at the Sachsenring in 2025. Further examinations revealed a previously undetected tear in the infraspinatus muscle, delaying his return to full fitness and ruling him out of the British Grand Prix.
In his place comes KTM test rider Pol Espargaro, who knows both the RC16 and the Tech3 setup inside out. The Spaniard has made several substitute appearances for the Austrian manufacturer since stepping away from full-time racing and will line up alongside Enea Bastianini at Silverstone.
Officially, KTM is presenting the move as a one-race substitution, with the factory hoping Vinales will be fit to return for the Aragon Grand Prix later this month.
That official explanation sits against the backdrop of one of the paddock's biggest talking points. Reports emerging before the British Grand Prix claimed KTM was considering replacing Vinales before the end of the season following a breakdown in the relationship between rider and manufacturer. Vinales swiftly rejected those claims, saying he intends to honour his contract and has no plans to walk away early.

The timing, though, inevitably raises questions. Even if this weekend's rider change is entirely injury-related, it places Espargaro on the Tech3 bike immediately after speculation that he could replace Vinales on a longer-term basis.
Whether this proves to be nothing more than a one-off appearance or the beginning of a more significant reshuffle will likely become clearer once MotoGP leaves Silverstone. For now, though, the Maverick Vinales and KTM story is fast becoming one of the most intriguing subplots of 2026.
