The new Nera model effectively completes the Hypermotard 698 Mono range, adding a darker visual treatment and extra equipment to Ducati’s lightweight single-cylinder platform. Pricing starts from £11,995.

Visually, the bike features a new, stealthy look, with black bodywork contrasted by Ducati Red wheels and frame details. Ducati has also fitted homologated black-finished Termignoni silencers as standard, helping sharpen up the rear-end styling while adding a slightly more aggressive edge to the bike’s appearance and sound.

The Nera also gets Ducati Quick Shift Up/Down fitted as standard, further boosting the bike’s sporty credentials both on the road and on track.

At the heart of the Hypermotard 698 Mono Nera sits Ducati’s Superquadro Mono engine — effectively a chopped-down version of the old 1299 Panigale twin-cylinder motor. The 659cc single uses Ducati’s trademark Desmodromic valve system and carries over several key features from the superbike engine, including its huge 116mm piston.

The result is a claimed 77.5bhp and a 10,250rpm rev limit, figures Ducati says make it the highest-performing road-going single-cylinder engine currently on sale.

The bike itself remains impressively lightweight too, tipping the scales at a claimed 151kg wet but without fuel. Ducati achieves that thanks to a lightweight trellis frame, aluminium-flanged brake discs and a pared-back chassis setup designed to keep the bike agile and lively.

As you’d expect from a modern Ducati, electronics are a major part of the package, with the Hypermotard 698 Mono Nera coming loaded with cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, launch control and engine brake control. At the same time, Ducati’s Slide-by-Brake system has been specifically developed to help riders back the bike into corners supermoto-style on track.

For riders wanting even more madness, Ducati also offers a race-only Termignoni exhaust system that unlocks an extra 7bhp and activates a dedicated Wheelie Assist function designed to help maintain longer balance-point wheelies electronically.
