A new MotoGP is apparently about to begin filming, with James Mangold and Timothée Chalamet reported to be working on High Side.

The new film, which The Hollywood Reporter describes as “Heat meets Hell or High Water”, is said to chart the story of a former MotoGP racer whose career was ended by a serious crash. When his brother offers him the chance to make some quick money as a bank robber, Chalamet’s character accepts and is recruited for a series of bank robberies on superbikes. Chuck in some absent father abandonment issues, and we have a tried-and-tested roadmap for a motorbike movie.

The film is based on an unpublished book written by the author, Jaime Oliveira. Olivera is said to be the person adapting the story to a screenplay. The film is set to be a Paramount Pictures production, although its release date and filming schedule are yet to be determined. Mangold is already committed to a number of projects, including a new Swamp Thing film for DC, as well as a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm.

Films rooted in the world of motorcycle racing have a chequered history and rarely feel accurate, relevant or realistic. One Fast Move, released in 2024, was one such movie that didn’t quite hit the mark, with the star in the film’s rider-coach/father’s advice of “always either full gas or full brake” being one of the more laughable moments.

We will wait with popcorn poised to see if this latest movie lives up to the hype.
