54 years 8 monthsMiguel Oliveira has been sent to hospital following a heavy crash in free practice one for the Indonesian MotoGP at Mandalike.
Oliveira suffered a big highside which was the only crash of FP1 in the premier class, and as a result the Portuguese rider fractured his right wrist. Out of action for the remainder of the weekend, Oliveira is also a major doubt for next weekend’s Japanese MotoGP, which is the second of five rounds in the space of six weeks.
Oliveira’s crash occurred at turn four and although it remains to be seen whether surgery will be needed, the Trackhouse Racing team will now need to rely heavily upon Raul Fernandez for the rest of the event.
A statement from the team said: “Miguel suffered a fracture of the right wrist. He is undergoing a three-dimensional CT scan in the hospital in Mataram to evaluate the need for surgery. As soon as we can, we will provide more information.”
Oliveira’s 2024 campaign has been anything but easy, as the soon-to-be Pramac Yamaha rider has finished a Grand Prix in the top ten on just five occasions. His best round of the season came at Sachsnering before the summer break when he claimed sixth.
Speaking to the MotoGP.com broadcast, team manager Davide Brivio seemed to indicate that Oliveira will indeed miss Japan next weekend: “It will most likely require surgery, but let’s wait for the scan to be done. Then he will fly back tonight and he will miss Japan for sure. And then we will see what’s going to happen step by step.”
The Indonesian round marks one of the busiest periods of the 2024 MotoGP season, with Japan soon to be followed by Thailand, Australia and a trip to Malaysia which will serve as the penultimate round before riders head to Valencia to finish the season.
