A national police officer in Ireland has been pronounced dead after being struck by a motorcycle during a speed check in Dublin.

Garda Kevin Flatley, was aged 49 and had served with the force for 26 years. It’s been confirmed he died at the scene after the horrific collision took place near Blake's Cross in Lusk, at around 1pm on Sunday.

It’s being reported that the officer was holding a speed gun at the side of the road when he was struck by the motorcycle. The rider has also been seriously injured as a result of the collision and was rushed to hospital.

Emergency services attended the scene and worked on the officer on the road, however, he passed away soon after.

The force has begun an investigation into the incident, as well as closing off the section of road where the tragedy happened. Forensic officers will now search the area.

In a statement, the police force (gardai) said: “Shortly before 1pm, gardaí and emergency services responded to a collision on the R132 in Lanestown, North County Dublin, where a motorcycle struck a member of An Garda Síochána’s Roads Policing Unit while on duty.

“The Garda, a male aged 49, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The motorcyclist, also a male and aged in 30s, was transported by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital for treatment. His condition is understood to be serious.

“The area has been preserved for examination, with traffic diversions currently in place. The local coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified. The deceased has been transferred to Dublin City Mortuary."

Sadly these incidents seem to be regular occurrences as the force’s commissioner, Drew Harris, said: "Unbelievably this afternoon we’ve had another garda member had his leg broken after being struck by a motorcycle and one arrest made.

"Only last weekend we had another garda member seriously injured being struck again by a motor vehicle and his leg badly broken as well. This is a regular occurrence where we are enforcing legislation, road traffic laws, but also criminal law in respect of road users.”
