The inquests at the Cheshire Coroner’s Court in Warrington have revealed that the deaths of BSB racers Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson in May, 2025, were as a result of “unsurvivable injuries”.

Jenner, 21, and Richardson, 29, died following an 11-rider crash that took place at turn one of the British Supersport race at Oulton Park, on May 5. Jenner succumbed to his head injuries at the track.

Richardson was initially treated at the circuit as well, before being taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. However, the New Zealander died prior to arrival as a result of injuries suffered to his chest.

The incident resulted in the cancellation of the remainder of the Bank Holiday Monday round, which opened the 2025 BSB season.

BSB race director Stuart Higgs, on behalf of series organisers Motor Sport Vision Racing, said the first corner, more commonly known as Old Hall corner, was not considered to be an area of high risk, and that it had no previous fatalities.

Cheshire Constabulary PC Andrew Balmforth, who is a forensic collision investigator, said the Oulton Park race track passed all licensing and inspection requirements, and that the accident could not have been avoided by other riders due to the high speeds involved and close racing.

When a verdict of accidental death was reached in court, senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish said:

“On the strength of the evidence we have heard I am satisfied those governing the race at Oulton Park that race weekend followed all required procedure, insofar as they had undertaken the annual inspections appropriately and they had required licences from their riders.”
