Is this thing real? It doesn’t look real. It looks like a 1980s vision of what scooters would look like in 2025.

So, wait… By that logic, it is real. Because it’s 2025 and New York City-based Infinite Machine is currently accepting orders for its uniquely styled P1 electric scooter.

Claiming a top speed of 65 mph and a range of 60 miles, this 6kW scooter features a removable battery, which means you can ride it to work and charge up on the company’s dime.

Aimed initially at New Yorkers (Infinite Machine’s website boasts that the P1 is “faster than the subway”), it is sold with a speed restriction of 30 mph. In the United States, a scooter or moped of that type doesn’t usually require a motorcycle license. In some states, it wouldn’t require a license at all.

With a software upgrade, however - which, it’s fair to assume will cost more - you can unlock the full potential of the P1 and keep up with the cool kids on the freeway.

As you can probably guess by looking at it, the P1 offers quite a lot of tech - including front and rear cameras, keyless access via your phone, a built-in GPS tracker (handy for when scofflaws take an interest in your scooter), and phone notification when anyone attempts to mess with your pride and joy.

Like all other scooters, the P1 boasts a decent amount of underseat storage and the advantage of being able to park up just about anywhere.

Unlike most other scooters, the P1 has pannier-like mounts where the rider can mount actual panniers, spare batteries, or a speaker system. Mobile disco! Your neighbours will love you.

According to the Infinite Machine website:

“P1 arose out of brothers Joe and Eddie Cohen's dissatisfaction with existing two wheel electric vehicles. One one side of the spectrum are plastic, low-end vehicles with subpar performance and rudimentary technology. On the other end are legacy companies who struggle to adapt to the possibilities of electrification, new technology, and modern sensibilities. As lifelong New Yorkers, the Cohen brothers saw an opportunity to build the ultimate vehicle for exploring and navigating their home city. With a team of engineers and designers, they designed the vehicle of their dreams, drawing inspiration from Brutalist architecture, consumer technology, and artists like Donald Judd.”

The vehicle is not yet being offered in the United Kingdom, in the United States it has a starting price of $10,000 (about £7,500 at current exchange rates). Delivery of vehicles is expected to begin in “Fall 2025,” which is, you know, now.
